The Division of Aging and Adult Services is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as an Adult Protective Services Investigator.

The position is responsible for performing a variety of case related activities involved in providing direct and indirect assistance to vulnerable, elderly and/or incapacitated adults.

After hours coverage may be required.


-          Investigates and provides assessment, evaluation and appropriate services to vulnerable adults who are alleged to be abused, neglected or exploited

-          Determines if services need to be provided

-          Interviews those who may have knowledge of the particular circumstances about the client

-          Writes comprehensive progress notes, case plans, risk assessments and closure summaries

-          Provides information and in-service to community agencies and the general public

-          Researches, obtains and analyzes complex financial medical documents including psychological evaluations

-          Files petitions for Guardian and/or Conservator as required or as necessary and provides testimony for case related court appearances

-          Facilitates in-home services and out-of-home placement

-          Collaborates with clients and community resources to deliver appropriate assistance

-          Meets and reviews cases with supervisor to ensure compliance

-          Travels on State business

-          Attend required statewide, district and unit meetings as well as periodic training

-          Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment


Knowledge of:

-          Risk assessment for elder mistreatment, human behavior, abusive adults, medical illnesses and psychological abuse

-          Physical behavioral indicators of abuse and/or neglect of mentally disabled and/or seriously mentally ill (SMI) adults and frail elderly

-          Substance abuse and its effects

-          Judicial system as it relates to the appointment of Guardian/Conservator

-          Legal issues and social work principles

Skill in:

-          Verbal and written communications

-          Establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships

-          Interviewing to extract pertinent information and listening via telephone in particular

-          Needs assessment of vulnerable and frail elderly

-          Organization and time management.

-          Microsoft Office Suite

Ability to:

-          Learn and adhere to federal and state laws, regulations and policies as they relate to APS

-          Learn and adhere to searching the APS computer system

-          Maintain confidentiality and accurately apply applicable statues, policies and procedures

-          Retrieve data, conduct research and write concise reports

-          Evaluate risk, set priorities and delegate work assignments


-          The combination of knowledge, skills and abilities needed for this position are acquired through a combination of education, training and two (2) years’ work experience

-          A Bachelor’s degree in social work, rehabilitation, counseling, education sociology, and psychology or other closely related field focusing on the provision of services with the community (i.e., human behavior and the elder/frail adult, abusive adults, medical issues and psychological issues)


-          In-state travel may be required for State business.  Employees who drive on state business must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.) AND have an acceptable driving record for the last 39 months including no DUI, suspension or revocations and less than 8 points on your license

-          If an Out of State Driver License was held within the last 39 months, a copy of your MVR (Motor Vehicle Record) is required PRIOR to driving for State Business

-          Employees may be required to use their own transportation as well as maintaining valid motor vehicle insurance and current Arizona vehicle registration; however, mileage will be reimbursed

-          A Level One Clearance Card from the Arizona Department of Public Safety is required to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position, in accordance with A.R>S.41-1968.  A Level Once Clearance Card can be applied for upon acceptance of a job offer

-          Be subject to a search of Child Protective Services Central Registry and the Adult Protective Services Registry

-          Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify), applicable to all new hired State employees

-          Successfully pass background and reference checks.  Employment is contingent upon completion of the above mentioned process and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions
