Infection Control Nurse

Arizona State Hospital - 501 N. 24th St., Phoenix, AZ 85008

The Arizona State Hospital (ASH) is located on a 93 acre campus at 24th Street and Van Buren, in Phoenix, Arizona.  ASH provides long-term inpatient psychiatric care to Arizonans with mental illnesses that are under court order for treatment. ASH protects the rights and privileges of each patient, including the patients’ rights to confidentiality and privacy. Treatment at ASH is considered “the highest and most restrictive” level of care in the state. Patients are admitted as a result of an inability to be treated in a community facility or due to their legal status.  Hospital personnel provide state-of-the-art inpatient psychiatric care and are committed to treating patients and personnel with dignity and respect.  Interdisciplinary care is delivered in collaboration with the patient, family, legal representatives and community providers with a focus on recovery and community reintegration.

JOB SUMMARY

The Infection Control Nurse will act as a liaison to all hospital departments and units, and will assist in the facility-wide program for the surveillance, prevention and control of infection.

Responsibilities include:

        Implementation, surveillance, collection of data, analysis, reporting and formulation/review of policies and procedures Coordinating the implementation of measures to reduce the risk of transmission of infection to patients, staff, visitors, volunteers, and others

        Participating in Root Cause Analysis for potential nosocomial outbreaks, along with aggregating and analyzing infection related data

        Providing Infection Control orientation and continuing education to staff

Position Requirements include:

-        This position requires incumbent to have and maintain a current Arizona RN license

-        Infection Control Certification or knowledge of principles of and ability to obtain certification

-        Knowledge of Medical terminology and procedures; CMS regulations, Joint Commission standards, and State licensing rules; principles of infection control and pharmacology; concepts of performance improvement and quality assurance activities; and basic computer programs and software related to the health record

-        Skills in excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills to interact with patients, professional and paraprofessional staff, as well as outside agencies/medical facilities/ medical providers; computerized electronic medical record; Microsoft office products; general office equipment; interpretation of policies, procedures and protocol; maintaining nursing standards consistent with the philosophy, objectives and standards of the Agency and the Arizona Nurse Practice Act.

-        Analyzing complex data; preparing and presenting educational materials for patients, families and staff; problem solving; functioning independently and prioritizing assignments; adapting quickly to changing priorities and remaining calm in stressful situations/emergencies

-        Handling multiple tasks simultaneously and working with all levels of staff (from unit/department based to administrative/leadership)

Preferred Qualifications:

        Preference will be given to candidates with prior Public Health experience

Employment Requirements

A State Hospital employee must be able to obtain a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card pursuant to A.R.S. § 41-1758.07. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (See Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12). Ideally the successful candidate will have strength to deal with physical situations involving patient care.
