Job Description

This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public as well as being courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public. This position, specifically, serves in the maintenance and operation traffic signal, ITS and roadway lighting systems. This position requires employee to participate in rotation-based 24 hour call back program.

  JOB SUMMARY

This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public as well as being courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public. This position, specifically, serves in the maintenance and operation traffic signal, ITS and roadway lighting systems. This position requires employee to participate in rotation-based 24 hour call back program.

Note: Positions will be assigned based off of experience and qualifications listed below.

  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

SLATE Technician 1 $21.5092/hr. Grade 18: This is the entry level for the SLATE series. Performs a broad scope of basic level electrical, electronic and/or mechanical duties related to the inspection, installation, maintenance and/or repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and intelligent transportation systems. Performs basic contract management, quality assurance, and inspection duties associated with traffic signals, roadway lighting, and intelligent transportation systems as required. Works under supervision with considerable on-the-job training. Employee may face hazards associated with electricity, falling objects, falls, confined space, drowning, engulfment, traffic, extreme climate and environment, heavy equipment, noise, hazardous materials, and operation of powered and non-powered tools.

 

Will have experience:

 

  • With heavy/motorized equipment operation

 

  • Equivalent to the appropriate technical level in the public or private sector

 

Requirements:

 

 

·         SLATE Tech 1 must have an Arizona CDL (Class “A”) permit prior to start date. Must be able to obtain an Arizona Class “A” Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) for a manual transmission (no automatic only restriction) within 6 months of appointment.

·         Must be able to Push/Pull 50 lbs. and Lift/Carry 50 Lbs.

 

·         Must be able to perform tasks while in a bucket up to 100 feet in the air.

 

Note: Overnight travel may be required

 

 

 

 

SLATE Technician 2 $23.0264/hr. Grade 19: This Is the Intermediate level for the SLATE series. Performs a broad scope of intermediate level electrical, electronic and/or mechanical duties related to the inspection, installation, maintenance and/or repair traffic signals, roadway lighting, and intelligent transportation systems and is responsible for associated record keeping/documentation. Performs contract management, quality assurance, and inspection duties associated with traffic signals, roadway lighting, and intelligent transportation systems as required. Employee may face hazards associated with electricity, falling objects, falls, confined space, drowning, engulfment, traffic, extreme climate and environment, heavy equipment, noise, hazardous materials, and operation of powered and non-powered tools.

 

Will have experience:

 

  • With heavy/motorized equipment operation

 

·         Equivalent to the appropriate technical level in the public or private sector. (minimum of 1 year equivalent experience at SLATE technician 1 level is required for SLATE technician 2)

 

·         Specific to traffic signals, roadway lighting, and intelligent transportation systems

 

Requirements:

 

·         SLATE Tech 2 must have an Arizona CDL (Class “A”) permit prior to start date. Must be able to obtain an Arizona Class “A” Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) for a manual transmission (no automatic only restriction) within 6 months of appointment.

 

·         Must be able to Push/Pull 50 lbs. and Lift/Carry 50 Lbs.

 

·         Must be able to perform tasks while in a bucket up to 100 feet in the air.

SLATE Technician 3 $25.4138/hr. Grade 20: This is the advanced level for the SLATE series.  Highly skilled electrical technician with significant specialization in all areas of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and intelligent transportation systems. Works under the general supervision of a SLATE Supervisor. Performs and may direct staff in a broad scope of advanced level electrical, electronic and/or mechanical duties related to the inspection, installation, maintenance and/or repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and intelligent transportation systems. Position includes significant record keeping documentation and project inspection. Provides advice and resolves problems; participates in work activities as required. Schedules and assigns work activities; approves inspection project documentation reports; determines and select alternatives in materials or equipment, has authority to inspect and determine the need for repairs or replacement; recommends ordering of materials and equipment; works under supervision while providing training to lower level technicians; interprets specification requirements, performs contract management and quality assurance as required, reviews plans and special provisions for ongoing projects. Employee may face hazards associated with electricity, falling objects, falls, confined space, drowning, engulfment, traffic, extreme climate and environment, heavy equipment, noise, hazardous materials, and operation of powered and non-powered tools.

 

Will have experience:

 

  • With heavy/motorized equipment operation

 

·         Equivalent to the appropriate technical level in the public or private sector (minimum of 1 year equivalent experience at SLATE technician 2 level is required for SLATE technician 3)

 

·         With leadership and training of subordinates

 

·         Specific to traffic signals, roadway lighting, and intelligent transportation systems

 

 

Requirements:

 

·         SLATE Tech 3 must have an Arizona CDL (Class “A”) permit prior to start date. Must be able to obtain an Arizona Class “A” Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) for a manual transmission (no automatic only restriction) within 6 months of appointment.

 

 

·         Must be able to Push/Pull 50 lbs. and Lift/Carry 50 Lbs.

 

·         Must be able to perform tasks while in a bucket up to 100 feet in the air

This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License.  Candidates for this position must complete page of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR).  The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.12 (H) and (I).  The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT.   Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.
