  • Answer questions from public and private agencies concerning state and federal requirements in special education.
  • Serve as statewide consultant to Public Education Agencies (PEAs), other state agencies, community service providers, and parent organizations offering technical assistance and training when requested in the area of secondary transition services.
  • Answer questions from public and private agencies concerning indicators and data collection, analysis, and data use.
  • Attend special education staff meetings and participate in various intra and inter-agency task teams/committees.
  • Attend conferences, write articles, solicit information from experts in the field, read newsletters, journals, books, regulations, attorney general opinions, and laws related to special education and secondary transition.
  • Develop charts, brochures, or handouts to inform the public, parents, PEAs, and other state agencies of compliance of state and federal special education laws/regulations and practices/processes for implementation of programs to meet compliance.
  • Organize and write materials and guidelines to be disseminated to PEAs and the public.
  • Serve as liaison for the purpose of improving transition services for eligible youth with disabilities.
  • Participate in the development, coordination, and implementation of annual transition conference.
  • Participate in the collection, analysis, and reporting of data related to indicators.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of improvement activities related to indicators.
  • Work to coordinate and oversee secondary transition Information Technology (IT) applications.
  • Consult with the IT section to revise, maintain, and enhance the web-based application.
  • In-state and out-of-state travel is required for this position.

    The Arizona Department of Education (ADE) Exceptional Student Services Section is seeking a Secondary Transition Specialist.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

    KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

    • State and federal laws and implementing regulations in the area of special education and transition
    • History and development of special education
    • Role of other state and private agencies in the provision of transition services to children with disabilities
    • School-to-work initiatives, work experience programs, employment models, self-determination approaches, preservice preparation programs for transition services, and state and local level interagency agreements
    • School administrative structure and current sources of information for special education teachers
    • Understanding of State Education Agency (SEA), PEA, and private school organization structure
    • Familiarity with school district funding and special education budgeting procedures
    • Effective instructional strategies and curriculum for regular and special education
    • Applicants must have taught or administered a special education program.
    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or a related field is required.

    SKILLS REQUIRED:

    • Excellent communication, both oral and written
    • Effective public relations and public speaking
    • Effective interviewing
    • Program monitoring, problem-solving, mediation, facilitation, and leadership
    • Intermediate skill in using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, and Google applications

    ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    • Provide consultant services and technical assistance to students, families, advocacy groups, educators, and other professionals
    • Perform effective research
    • Analyze data
    • High level of organization
    • Excellent time management

    SPECIAL SELECTION FACTOR(S):

     

    • Preference will be given to those applicants with experience in special education and transition services’ programs.
