This position is under the Virology/Serology section of the laboratory which provides statewide clinical diagnostic and reference testing services for viral and some bacterial agents that aid in the diagnosis, management, and surveillance of infectious diseases that are of public health importance. This position is responsible for following standard operating procedures for laboratory testing using a variety of complex testing methods including molecular methods, traditional virological methods, and serological methods. In addition, this position will be responsible for other tasks to support laboratory testing in the section. This position may play a supportive role to other sections in the event of a disease outbreak or public health emergency. This position will participate in the Agency's Bioterrorism program that can include work on nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preparedness – State Laboratory

JOB SUMMARY

This position is under the Virology/Serology section of the laboratory which provides statewide clinical diagnostic and reference testing services for viral and some bacterial agents that aid in the diagnosis, management, and surveillance of infectious diseases that are of public health importance. This position is responsible for following standard operating procedures for laboratory testing using a variety of complex testing methods including molecular methods, traditional virological methods, and serological methods. In addition, this position will be responsible for other tasks to support laboratory testing in the section. This position may play a supportive role to other sections in the event of a disease outbreak or public health emergency. This position will participate in the Agency's Bioterrorism program that can include work on nights, weekends, and holidays.

 

What will I be doing in this job?

        Performing complex laboratory test methods including molecular methods, traditional virological methods, and serological methods in accordance with standard operating procedures

        Performing quality control assignments

        Conducting research and development

        Miscellaneous duties (i.e. preventative maintenance, result interpretation, consultations, aliquoting, etc.)

 

What does this job require?

-        Knowledge of microorganisms and modes of disease transmissions

-        Knowledge of the immune system and serologic assessment of that response

-        Experience with laboratory techniques: GLP, aseptic technique, laboratory safety

-        Experience with microbiological techniques: microscopy, slide preparation and staining

-        Experience with virological techniques: mammalian cell culture, microscopy, viral isolation

-        Experience with molecular microbiological techniques: RNA/DNA isolation, RNA/DNA amplification and detection, sequencing

-        Experience with serological techniques

-        Experience with Quality Assurance and Quality Control

-        Federal and State standards applicable to laboratory policies and procedures relating to specimen handling, aseptic technique and laboratory safety; regulations pertaining to confidentiality and reportable diseases

-        Strong verbal and written communication skills

-        Strong computer skills

-        Strong degree of manual dexterity

-        Time management

-        Candidate must meet the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) minimum requirements for the performance of high complexity testing as defined in the CLIA regulations subpart D6171 493.1489(b)(2)(i). http://www.cms.hhs.gov/CLIA/03_Interpretive_Guidelines_for_Laboratories.asp#TopOfPage

-        Candidate must complete and pass the Department of Justice's Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Security Risk Assessment (SRA)

What are the preferred qualifications for this job?

-        Bachelor's Degree or Master's Degree in a laboratory science to include 12 semester hours in microbiology, molecular biology, or related field from a nationally accredited college or university (or a foreign degree which has previously been determined to be equivalent by a nationally recognized accrediting agency)

-        Professional certifications such as ASCP and ASM
