JOB SUMMARY

The Transportation Engineer 1:

 

·         Prepares pavement design summaries and materials design reports for pavement construction or rehabilitation projects; Performs visual distress surveys, Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) data analyses and pavement core analyses

 

·         Reviews material s design documents, construction project plans, and specifications, prepared by consultants, ADOT and/or other government agencies; verifies the accuracy and methodology of pavement design calculations and analyses to meet acceptable design standards and practices

 

·         Attends project development coordination meetings and design review/ comment resolution meetings, with ADOT and other agencies. Provides pavement design related information and detailed technical assistance to others involved in project development or construction

 

·         Calculates required pavement structural sections, overlays, and supporting material s parameters; calculate s roadway construction bid quantities and preliminary cost estimates to accompany design reports and to formulate various pavement design alternatives. Utilizes AASHTO 1993, AASHTOWare Pavement ME and SODA software to design pavements. Coordinates pavement designs projects with geotechnical engineers, ADOT engineering districts, Bridge engineers, project managers and ADOT Pavement Management Section

 

·          Researches and analyzes historical engineering design information (as-built plans, pavement management system data, traffic data and maintenance histories of roadways) for pavement designs

·         Represents Roadway Engineering Group at Project Site Reviews, Partnering Workshops, Pre-construction Conferences, and Issue Resolution Meetings in order to provide technical assistance on materials related issues

 

 

  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

·         Principles and practices of Highway and Civil Engineering, including but not limited to pavement design, computer applications, soils and soil mechanics, highway construction materials and geotechnical engineering principles

·         Design and use of rubberized pavements throughout the state and the Quiet Pavement Program in the Phoenix metro area

·         Design and use of both Asphaltic and Concrete pavements, Rubberized Concrete, and thin white topping concrete

·         ADOT Preliminary Engineering and Design Manual, Pavement Design Manual, AASHTO Design methodology, SODA rehabilitation methodology, Mechanistic Empirical design methods

·         Preventative maintenance of both Asphaltic and Concrete pavements

Skills in:

 

·         Superior analytical skills in order to evaluate and analyze a wide variety of complex materials engineering data and reports

·         Effective oral and written communications skills to accurately convey ideas and instructions to others within ADOT, as well as those outside the Department such as FHWA, Local Governments, Contractors, Consultants, and University Academia

·         Good organizational skills

Ability to:

 

·         Plan and prioritize work assignments in order to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Department and the Pavement Design Section

·         Obtain state of the art information regarding complex materials related issues in order to solve problems that arise during construction

·         Exercise considerable engineering judgment when dealing with non-routine situations

·         Interact effectively with District personnel, as well as other ADOT employees, designers, contractors, and project related personnel

 

  PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering

 

Experience in pavement design, geotechnical engineering, construction management and/or highway design preferred

REQUIREMENTS FOR POSITION

·         Must be a registered Professional Civil Engineer in the State of Arizona or eligible for reciprocity.

 PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License.  Candidates for this position must complete page 5 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR).  The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.12 (H) and (I).  The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT.  Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.
