Epidemiologists play a critical role in our agency’s mission.  Their analytical and investigative abilities to identify outbreaks, trends, and analysis for solutions are essential to our agency’s work and proposed future plans.  These abilities are essential in order for the agency to design programs that keep all Arizonans healthy.  This position serves as a journey-level epidemiologist responsible for carrying out a range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities related to the surveillance, detection, and prevention of diseases and injuries specific to maternal and child health (MCH). In addition, this position will be responsible for surveillance, communication, investigation, reporting, and data driven education and mobilization for MCH programs with a specific focus on supporting the Title V MCH block grant and the Sexual Violence Prevention Education Program.

JOB SUMMARY

Epidemiologists play a critical role in our agency’s mission.  Their analytical and investigative abilities to identify outbreaks, trends, and analysis for solutions are essential to our agency’s work and proposed future plans.  These abilities are essential in order for the agency to design programs that keep all Arizonans healthy.  This position serves as a journey-level epidemiologist responsible for carrying out a range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities related to the surveillance, detection, and prevention of diseases and injuries specific to maternal and child health (MCH). In addition, this position will be responsible for surveillance, communication, investigation, reporting, and data driven education and mobilization for MCH programs with a specific focus on supporting the Title V MCH block grant and the Sexual Violence Prevention Education Program.

 

What will I be doing in this job?

-        Participating in conducting outbreak and other epidemiologic investigations by assisting with onsite review of facilities and procedures

-        Interviewing patients, health care providers, and others involved; and assisting in collecting data from local agencies or other health entities

-        Participating in developing epidemiologic investigations

-        Using databases for analysis of health problems

-        Using surveillance systems to collect disease or health outcome data

-        Developing and providing scientific and clinical advice and technical assistance to various public, private, and nonprofit health and health-related state and local agencies and organizations

-        Serving as a scientific consultant for a public health program or project

-        Serving as the lead in the design and implementation of programmatic evaluations

-        Designing data-driven strategic plans and initiatives with stakeholder input

-        Conducting literature reviews and assists in preparing reports from analyses of surveillance data, literature reviews, and other information using behavioral science, demographic and epidemiologic analytic techniques, and evaluation

-        Participating in after-hours activities including partner meetings, investigation, outbreak and emergency response as needed

-        Participating in writing grants and other funding proposals

 

What does this job require?

-        Masters of public health in Epidemiology or a science-related field and one year of professional experience in the  applied public health epidemiology

-        Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of epidemiology

-        Research methods, procedures and techniques used in identifying and evaluating disease characteristics

-        Contemporary medical methods and practices used in the control of a variety of diseases

-        Principles and practices applicable to the surveillance and investigation of diseases

-        Public health surveillance, computerized database management, data analysis, program evaluation, literature search

-        Effective verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills

-        Skills and abilities to conduct scientific studies required to identify and isolate various diseases

-        Compilation and the evaluation of technical epidemiological data

-        Conducting investigations

-        Interpersonal relations, as applied to contacts with representatives of other governmental agencies and the public

What are the preferred qualifications for this job?

-        Professional experience working in maternal and child health

-        Ability to design, develop, and maintain databases

-        Advance skills in using statistical software (SAS, SPSS)

-        Experience designing and conducting program evaluations

-        Experience using vital records and other public health surveillance databases

-        Ideal candidate will preferably be proficient in speaking, reading, and writing Spanish

-        Ideal candidate will have experience working with the different levels of US health care system and public health system, and working with electronic public health surveillance databases
