Additionally, this position participates in resident treatment groups; screening, interviewing, needs assessment, evaluation and recording data. The Arizona State Hospital (ASH) is located on a 93 acre campus at 24th Street and Van Buren, in Phoenix, Arizona.  ASH provides long-term inpatient psychiatric care to Arizonans with mental illnesses that are under court order for treatment. ASH protects the rights and privileges of each patient, including the patients’ rights to confidentiality and privacy. Treatment at ASH is considered “the highest and most restrictive” level of care in the state. Patients are admitted as a result of an inability to be treated in a community facility or due to their legal status.  Hospital personnel provide state-of-the-art inpatient psychiatric care and are committed to treating patients and personnel with dignity and respect.  Interdisciplinary care is delivered in collaboration with the patient, family, legal representatives and community providers with a focus on recovery and community reintegration.

Job Summary

This position performs individual and group therapy for adult male sex offender population. Additionally, this position participates in resident treatment groups; screening, interviewing, needs assessment, evaluation and recording data. Responsibilities include:

        Participating in clinical treatment planning for residents at ACPTC

        Providing psychological treatment and counseling (individual and groups,) including intervention for sex offender populations

        Providing information regarding risk assessments for sex offenders: Develops implements and evaluates resident programs and provides accurate and timely documentation

        Serving on classification committee providing evaluation recommendations for committee to implement appropriate level changes of resident placement for the sex offender population

        Conducting research In areas of mental health, sex offender treatment, recidivism, psychology and special needs or resident population: presents case study reviews to members of psychology staff: works with professionals from outside agencies in joint treatment efforts

        Developing and maintaining psychological program resident files including treatment plans, progress reports, and case summaries: prepares periodic reports reviews

        Supporting a diverse multi-cultural workforce that reflects the community, promotes equal opportunity at all levels of ADHS, and creates an inclusive work environment that enables all individuals to perform to their fullest potential free from discrimination.

Position Requirements include:

-        Master's degree or 2 year's full time graduate work toward a Doctoral degree in Psychology, Educational Psychology, Counseling Psychology or other recognized area of psychology and possess directly related work experience.  

-        Knowledge of techniques and procedures for psychological counseling and therapy, including that for adult male sex offender populations; psychological screening, testing and evaluations;  contemporary thoughts and trends in psychology, sociology and mental health; research methods and techniques to include data analysis and psychological measurements; report writing

-        Skills in providing psychological treatment and counseling to individuals and groups, including that for sex offender populations; oral and written communication; case management; interpersonal relations and report writing

-        Ability to administer, score, and interpret a variety of psychological tests accurately and effectively; write summaries and reports of professional quality; perform counseling and therapy services with individuals and groups, including that for sex offender populations

Preferred Qualifications:

        Preference for those who hold a professional license

        Preference will be given to candidates with prior Public Health experience

Employment Requirements

A State Hospital employee must be able to obtain a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card pursuant to A.R.S. § 41-1758.07. Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.  Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (See Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12). Ideally the successful candidate will have strength to deal with physical situations involving patient care.
