This Occupational Therapist position will be responsible for instructing, guiding, and counseling subordinate level workers in carrying out a variety of therapeutic activities. Additionally, they will conduct therapy with individuals and groups in accordance with treatment plans and specific methodologies and techniques and chooses treatment modalities for their ability to produce predetermined goals such as increased muscle strength and coordination, sensory motor integration and/or increased awareness of, and ability to cope with one’s surroundings and interpersonal relationships. This position also maintains appropriate clinical and administrative records regarding diagnosis, treatment, and summary of patient's progress.

The Arizona State Hospital (ASH) is located on a 93 acre campus at 24th Street and Van Buren, in Phoenix, Arizona.  ASH provides long-term inpatient psychiatric care to Arizonans with mental illnesses that are under court order for treatment. ASH protects the rights and privileges of each patient, including the patients’ rights to confidentiality and privacy. Treatment at ASH is considered “the highest and most restrictive” level of care in the state. Patients are admitted as a result of an inability to be treated in a community facility or due to their legal status.  Hospital personnel provide state-of-the-art inpatient psychiatric care and are committed to treating patients and personnel with dignity and respect.  Interdisciplinary care is delivered in collaboration with the patient, family, legal representatives and community providers with a focus on recovery and community reintegration.

JOB SUMMARY

This position also maintains appropriate clinical and administrative records regarding diagnosis, treatment, and summary of patient's progress.

Responsibilities include:

        Supervising assigned therapy groups, evaluating new patients and consulting with patients

        Developing and/or adjusting treatment plan based on case information and chooses treatment modalities for patients integrating sensory motor skills and ability to cope with one's surrounding and interpersonal relationships

        Conducting therapy with individuals and groups in accordance with treatment plans and specific methodologies and techniques

        Instructing, guiding, and counseling subordinate level staff in carrying out therapeutic activities

        Maintaining appropriate clinical and administrative records regarding diagnosis, treatment, and summary of patients progress

        Conferring with staff members, specialists, and members of treatment team, determining patient care and treatment plan

        Attending supervisory and work system management meetings and participating in problem solving and decision making process

        Performing oversight & team lead special projects within the rehabilitation therapy department

Position Requirements include:

-        Requires certification as an Occupational Therapist by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy and licensure by the AZ Board of OT examiners (or must be attained within 6 months from the date of hire).

-        Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of occupational therapy; scope of occupational therapy and its relationship to other professions; anatomy, kinesiology and the therapeutic effects of exercise; community resources for care and rehabilitation of mental health issues; and supervisory techniques

-        Skills in applying occupational therapy technique; evaluating patient’s needs; planning therapeutic treatment programs and plans; explaining and demonstrating techniques to staff members and patients; motivating patients and adapting therapeutic equipment to patient needs and skill in interpersonal relationships; and working as a team member in interdisciplinary meetings

-        Ability to develop goals and objectives for the program; carry out and evaluate treatment programs; communicate verbally and in writing; document patient's progress toward goals and objectives; interpret and apply hospital rules, regulations, policies and procedures and protocols; establish positive therapeutic relationships with patients; implement and supervise patient work activities; establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with all hospital discipline personnel; implement and supervise patient work activities; develop effective patient treatment modalities; and be able to certify to drive a 12 passenger van.

Preferred Qualifications:

        Master's degree or higher in Occupational Therapy Preferred

        Preference will be given to candidates with prior Public Health experience

A State Hospital employee must be able to obtain a valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card pursuant to A.R.S. § 41-1758.07. Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.  Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (See Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12). Ideally the successful candidate will have strength to deal with physical situations involving patient care.
