The Bureau of Public Health Preparedness is looking for a motivated and inquisitive individual to join our team. The Public Health Scientist is responsible for conducting testing to isolate and identify pathogenic microorganisms and toxins deemed to be important by law enforcement and public health agencies for priority biological agents and will performed microbiological, serological and molecular testing of clinical and reference laboratory specimens, perform quality control, maintain laboratory records, provide consultation to clients and other laboratorians and perform preventative maintenance on equipment within the Mycobacteriology/Bacteriology Section.  The individual in this role will maintain the laboratory reagent and material stocks for testing conducted by the sections; play a supportive role in the laboratory in the event of a disease outbreak.  This position may require participation in the rotating on-call schedule in the Agency's Bioterrorism program that can include nights, weekends and holidays.  The position requires successful completion/passing of a Department of Justice Security Risk Assessment (SRA).

JOB SUMMARY

What will I be doing in this job?

-        Performing complex, specialized microbiological and molecular biological test procedures on specimens or isolates submitted for analysis

-        Performing Quality Control assignments

-        Assisting in research and development for implementation of new test procedures (participate in multi-laboratory validation studies and protocol development as assigned)

-        Participating in exercises/drills to challenge laboratory response capabilities

-        Miscellaneous duties (i.e. preventative maintenance, result interpretation, consultations, aliquoting, etc.)

 

What does this job require?

-        Laboratory knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques to include isolation and analysis of DNA

-        Proper microbiologic techniques including isolation and characterization of microorganisms, microscopy, centrifugation, disease modes of transmission

-        Use of specialized equipment and scientific terminology

-        Federal and State standards applicable to laboratory policies and procedures relating to specimen handling, aseptic technique and laboratory safety

-        Regulations pertaining to confidentiality and reportable diseases

-        Possess strong laboratory skills including pipetting, culturing bacterial specimens, the ability to perform light and FA microscopy techniques and excellent skills in PCR and other molecular and biological techniques.

-        Excellent teaching ability

-        Assume responsibility and work independently

-        Aptitude and troubleshooting ability with complex instrumentation

-        Excellent written and verbal communication skills

-        Excellent public speaking skills

-        Excellent time management skills

-        Ability to interpret and evaluate results of microbiological and molecular biology laboratory tests and analyses

-        Communicate verbally and in writing

-        Perform methods development projects and related test applications

-        Maintain accurate laboratory notes

-        Write technical reports

-        Establish and maintain effective work relationships

-        Ability to interact well with laboratory coworkers, submitters, administrative personnel and management

-        Possess a high degree of self-motivation and the ability to motivate others

-        Candidate must meet the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CUA) minimum requirements for the performance of high complexity testing as defined in the CUA regulations subpart 06171 493.1489(b)(2)(i)

What are the preferred qualifications for this job?

        Previous microbiology and molecular testing experience

        Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in microbiology, molecular biology, or biochemistry

        Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry or related field

        Professional certifications such as ASCP and ASM

        Preference will be given to candidates with prior Public Health experience
