EQUIPMENT REPAIR TECHNICIAN

 

*This position is eligible to participate in the ASE Stipend Pay Program, employees can earn up to $14,400 a year with qualifying certifications.

JOB SUMMARY

 

This Equipment Repair Technician position offers a great opportunity for you to combine your journey level mechanical experience and your excellent diagnostic skills in maintaining the Light/Heavy Equipment Fleet for ADOT. You’ll stay challenged with a diverse set of job duties and enjoy working in a fast-paced and supportive work environment.

CDL training may be provided by EQS if necessary.

 

This position is responsible for inspecting new vehicles and equipment and interpreting written vehicle/equipment specifications.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Evaluate compliance, product quality and overall workmanship in accordance with specifications and established ADOT standards.
  • Provide accurate detailed documentation of discrepancies or deficiencies in meeting written specifications and established ADOT standards.
  • Coordinate these findings and in conference with supervisor, develop final inspection records.

·       Install 2-way radios, electrical accessories, components and assemblies on new vehicles and equipment in order to meet the configurations requested of the end users.

Read and interpret work orders, assembly and simple installation instructions, and diagrams in order to accurately and efficiently assemble and install components.

·       Inspect, diagnose and make repairs to reissue vehicles and equipment being returned to service.

·       Performs various functions related to preparation of vehicles and equipment designated for disposal through both Donee sales and public auctions.

·       Must furnish own tools and toolbox.

·       Operate vehicles and/or equipment requiring a driver’s license and/or CDL.

 

This position requires flexibility with work hours and days/nights, weekends and holidays to accommodate emergency repair work and varied schedules.

 

  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

Knowledge in

  • Basic mechanical, technical and operation of automotive, light, medium and heavy duty truck, off-road construction equipment and specialized highway maintenance equipment
  • Power plant, drive train, hydraulic system, electrical and electrical controls system functions, operation, inspection, diagnosis and repair procedures
  • Proper use and care of shop tools and equipment
  • Safety regulations, directives and policies affecting the work environment
  • Parts procurement practices and inventory control procedures
  • General personal computer and business software operation
  • Experience in utilizing Fleet Focus equipment management system or similar

 

Skills in

  • Focusing on procedures and processes and developing effective solutions within resources available
  • Safe operation of hand tools and related shop equipment
  • Safe operation of materials handling equipment, i.e. forklift
  • Effective written and verbal communication
  • Methodically approaching challenges

 

Ability to

  • Read and interpret technical and equipment specification language and apply reason in determining compliance or noncompliance with contract requirements
  • Exercise flexibility and be adaptive; adjust actions to changing situations and priorities as required
  • Recognize self-limitations and know when to ask for assistance
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to utilize a PC and PC programs and manage time effectively
  • Lift up to 50 lbs and push/pull 90 lbs; pass a physical exam.

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE

 

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

Minimum five years’ experience in a fleet maintenance environment to include installation and assembly, and interpreting written vehicle specs.

 

Successful completion of a community college or vocational school program in automotive or diesel technology.

Education may be substituted on a month-for-month basis for the experience, up to a maximum of two years.

 

ASE certification and/or Medium/Heavy Duty Truck, Bus or Heavy Equipment Manufacturers certifications are highly desirable.

 

Successful candidate must have their own tools for the position.

 

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

 

Employment is contingent upon passing a medical/physical examination.

 

Position requires possession of a valid Class A CDL with a "N" endorsement or the ability to obtain a Class A CDL with "N" endorsement within the sixth month of employment. Must retain said license and endorsements during the period of employment. Additional endorsements may be required during the period of employment to meet shop mission requirements.

 

Candidates for this position must complete and sign PART 1 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR).  The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.12 (H) and (I).  The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT.   Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.
