This position serves as a senior-level professional epidemiologist responsible for carrying out a broad and complex range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities related to the surveillance, detection, and prevention of diseases and injuries.

What will I be doing in this job?

-         Conduct epidemiologic investigations used in the prevention and control of communicable or chronic diseases, injuries, and other health conditions and in the planning of health programs. Identify, analyze, and report public health issues and problems. Participates in the planning of epidemiologic investigations

-         Designs, manipulates, and uses databases for analysis of health problems to assess the potential public health impact. Ensures data quality and database functionality by working with the PRISM Database Manager, IT partners, and the PRISM developer (ASD)

-         Performs statistical analyses related to complex analytical investigations involving highly specialized scientific data. In addition to using known techniques for analyzing epidemiologic investigation data, adapts or combines a variety of existing statistical methods to fulfill specific project needs

-         Provides scientific advice and technical assistance to other STD epi staff, communities, and outside partners. Conduct oral presentations to diverse audiences

-         Participates in writing grants and other funding proposals

What does this job require?

-         Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of epidemiology

-         Research methods, procedures and techniques used in identifying and evaluating disease characteristics

-         Contemporary medical methods and practices used in the control of a variety of diseases

-         Principles and practices applicable to the surveillance and investigation of diseases

-         Public health surveillance, computerized database management, data analysis, program evaluation, literature search, effective verbal and written communication, and interpersonal skills

-         Privacy laws to protect confidentiality, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and applicable state and local privacy laws

-         Agency procedures for handling Freedom of Information Act requests

-         Ethical principles in preparing and submitting publications and epidemiologic principles and methods to make recommendations regarding the validity of epidemiologic data

-         Implementing and maintaining disease surveillance programs. At minimum, knowledge of SAS programming

-         Skills and abilities to use critical thinking to determine whether a public health problem exists

-         Articulate the need for further investigation or other public health action on the basis of results of literature review and assessment of current data

-         Collaborate with others inside and outside the agency to identify the problem and form recommendations

-         Investigate acute and chronic conditions or other adverse outcomes in the population

-         Analyze data from an epidemiologic investigation or study

-         Manage data from surveillance, investigations, or other sources. Recommend evidence-based interventions and control measures in response to epidemiologic findings

-         Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies

-         Support a diverse multi-cultural workforce that reflects the community, promotes equal opportunity at all levels of public employment, and creates an inclusive work environment that enables all individuals to perform to their fullest potential free from discrimination


The ideal candidate will have:

-         Bachelors in public health or a science-related field and five years of experience in applied public health epidemiology

-         Masters of public health in Epidemiology may substitute for two years of experience and Doctor of Philosophy in related field may substitute for 4 years of experience

Licenses and Certifications?

Driving is required for State Business.

-          Employees who drive on state business require possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.  Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (See Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).
