JOB SUMMARY:

The Arizona Department of Corrections is seeking an experienced Director of Communications and Media Relations. The position provides oversight of the agency Public Information Office responsible for media relations, public relations, social media management, public engagements, crisis communications, and special event planning for the largest state agency. The successful candidate will be results oriented, experienced and an innovative leader over subordinate staff and a reputable, reliable and timely public information office program. Further the ideal candidate will be knowledgeable of government branches and roles, as well as the interpretation of laws and policies.

JOB DUTIES: 

-          Oversees media and public relations function for the agency

-          Develops proactive internal and external communication strategies

-          Responds positively and proactively to requests from the media

-          Directly and indirectly supervises the Communications and Media Relations team, including Media Administrator, Video Producer, Internal Communications Coordinator and Public Information Liaison

-          Serves as a member of the agencies Executive Team by providing input on issues and serving as a communications resource

-          Drives on State business

-          Manages development and oversight of budget for area of responsibility

 

 

SPECIAL SELECTION FACTOR(S) – THE FOLLOWING ARE REQUIRED:

Requires possession of, and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to drivers license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

-          Principles and practices of Public Relations

-          Communication strategies

-          Management and supervision techniques

-          Personal computer and software programs; including Microsoft Suite, Internet Explorer, Graphics and/or presentation software

Skill in:

-          Directing media, communications and public relation functions in a governmental environment

-          Supervising media relations staff

-          Writing effective media releases with attention to detail

-          Managing strategic planning for media relation efforts

-          Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships

 

Ability to:

-          Respond and serve as the primary spokesperson for media inquiries

-          Elevate the profile and perception of the agency and its management in the eyes of the media, the public, legislators and other stakeholders

-          Serve successfully as a spokesperson and media contact for high profile individual and be familiar with rapid response, crisis media and social media strategies

-          Provide communications counsel to senior management

-          Handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines

SELECTIVE PREFERENCE(S) - IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS:

-          Extensive professional experience directing media, communications and public relations functions in a governmental environment.

-          Served successfully as a spokesperson and media contact for high profile individuals and will be familiar with rapid response , crisis media and social media strategies

-          Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations or related field

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: 

Employment is contingent on the selected applicant passing a background investigation.

RETIREMENT: 

Positions in this classification participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
