The Department of Economic Security (DES), Office of Continuous Improvement (OCI), is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as a Lean Coach. The person in this position will serve as an advisor for all Lean Initiatives with a direct reporting structure to the Senior Lean Coach. This position will work closely with the Senior Lean Coach and Executive Leadership Team to identify opportunities for improvement and design/implement strategies to improve services and reduce time frames and costs while maintaining or improving the quality of services provided across the agency. The Lean Coach will help build a culture of continuous improvement, engaging employees at all levels of the organization with a dedicated focus of facilitating change.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

-          Knowledge of Lean management methodologies, practices, tools and principles, including: Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen, Plan/Do/Check/Act Cycle, Gemba, problem solving, Standard Work and 5S+

-          Knowledge of government organizational structures, including the principles and practices of public administration

-          Knowledge of strategic planning, Quality Management and statistical concepts

-          Knowledge of the techniques and principles of project management, process improvement modeling and research techniques

-          Skill in coaching at various levels of an organization, from the front line to the executive leadership level

-          Skill in the effective communication of ideas and information, both verbally and in writing

-          Skill in establishing and maintaining productive relationships with individuals that may have conflicting goals

-          Ability to balance the needs of multiple stakeholders and shareholders

-          Ability to facilitate Kaizen events with cross-functional teams

-          Ability to assist teams with prioritizing improvements and make recommendations to functional leaders

-          Ability to advise colleagues across the organization on Lean processes, including practical application and analysis tools

-          Ability to train and coach at all levels of the organization, sharing best practices and learnings, as well as adding opportunities to continuously improve the teams

-          Ability to assess the effectiveness of various coaching and teaching techniques applied and adjust accordingly when needed

Licenses and Certifications:

-          In-state travel is required. This position will require the possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. An acceptable driving record of the last 39 months is required, including no DUI, suspensions or revocations and less than 8 points on your license. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).


-          Experience in the delivery of training on continuous improvement tools and principles, including coaching and mentoring in problem solving methodology, development of metrics and the facilitation of Kaizen events.

-          Ability to demonstrate mastery of Lean tools and principles through a technical evaluation.

-          A demonstrated track record of successful improvement efforts.

-          Successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify), applicable to all newly hired state employees

-          Successfully pass background and reference checks; employment is contingent upon completion of the above-mentioned process and the agency’s ability to reasonably accommodate any restrictions.
