The Highway Operation Technician 4 performs a broad scope of high level highway operational duties (including scheduling, assigning and overseeing crew/org work, inspecting work, training and guiding staff) related to items such as operation of motorized vehicles and equipment, pavement care and preservation, roadside shoulder restoration and repairs, delivery of equipment and materials, permit compliance, record keeping, work management reports, inventory and features tracking, budgeting, data entry, contract preparation and tracking, environmental compliance, vehicle and equipment care. Provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public, as well as being courteous, considerate and prompt in dealing with and serving the public. Establishes priorities to be accomplished and communicates to the crews the needed work and location. The progress of the crews and contractors will be inspected, recorded and (if needed) authorized for payment. The position will assure proper procedures are being utilized. May act on behalf of the supervisor in his/her absence, training and guiding other staff, overseeing special projects, feature inventory assessment, and level of service measurements, as well as assisting with the day-to-day operation of the ORG.



Knowledge of:

·         Extensive knowledge of procedures, practices and methods of the operation, preventive maintenance and minor repair of vehicles and equipment used in roadway operations, roadside operations, landscape and irrigation operations, sign operations, striping operations, and sign fabrication operations

·         Office procedures, procurement, PeCoS reporting and coding, inventory and customer relations

·         Federal, state and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to work activities, safety practices and public relations

·         Wide-ranging knowledge of materials, equipment and tools used in work activities and established work methods and standards

·         Procedures and practices established for work section broad knowledge of MUTCD


Skills in:

·         Applying and making intermediate level interpretations of federal, state and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to work activities, safety practices and public relations

·         Using proper materials, vehicles and equipment to perform work activities within established work methods

·         Oral and written communication

·         Problem solving

·         Interpersonal relationships

Ability to:

·         Plan, coordinate, analyze, perform multiple tasks, communicate effectively, comprehend directions, and work under stress



·         2-3 years’ experience equivalent to a Highway Operations Tech 1

·         1-2 years’ experience equivalent to a Highway Operations Tech 2

·         1-2 years’ experience equivalent to a Highway Operations Tech 3



·         Class A Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements



This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License.  Candidates for this position must complete page 5 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR).  The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.12 (H) and (I).  The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT.  Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.
