 Job Summary

This position will remain open until business needs are met.


The Arizona Department of Revenue is currently seeking a motivated, innovative and solutions driven individual to work as our new Auditor 3. Performs field audits of the financial records on intra- and interstate businesses of average to considerable complexity; determines tax liabilities involving one or several of the state’s taxes, prepares working papers and recommendations for the final audit memorandum; may serve as lead for the most complex of businesses. May require in and out of state travel up to three weeks in duration.  Review and research various city issues from simple to average complexity. May be required to provide training.


 Job Duties

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

·     Under general supervision, conduct audits of Arizona Transaction Privilege and Use Tax based on information requested through correspondence with taxpayers and/or changes in calculation resulting from additional information. Inspects and examines returns, makes determinations and recommends returns for audits. Requires in and out of state travel up to three weeks duration per trip.

·     Examines financial records of a business subject to taxation; accounts for all factors affecting taxation of various kinds. Prepares work papers for possible refunds/additional tax, correspondence and weekly reports.

·     Attends staff meeting of work unit or section, under direction of work supervisor, gives and receives information helpful in work unit or work system operation.

·     Confers with other practitioners and technical experts in order to broaden knowledge, acquire specific information or obtain advice or consultation.

·     Research and analyze information from multiple sources to determine resolution. Aid taxpayers and Cities personnel with various tax issues. Aid taxpayers with voluntary compliance.


 Pre-Employment Requirements

Valid Arizona Driver's License.

Candidates for this position will be required to submit to a Criminal History Investigation, Tax Filing Records and Employment Verification check prior to an official job offer.


 Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of

·     Principles and practices of auditing and accounting.

·     Federal/state laws, city code, rules and regulations pertaining to taxation.

·     Computerized products used in accounting systems and processes and Microsoft Office products.

·     Policies and procedures established for the work system.


Skilled in

·     Performing detailed examinations of state tax documents

·     Analyzing and evaluating taxpayer claims, and applying auditing and accounting techniques.

·     Interpreting and applying federal and state laws pertaining to taxation.

·     Use of computerized products utilized to accomplish audits.

·     Mathematical computation, communication and analytical skills.


Ability to

·     Work on multiple projects based on changing priorities.

·     Work independently and adapt to changing environments and new technologies with colleagues, clients and team members.

·     Lean and apply LEAN concepts, principles and tools used to create and deliver perspectives with fewest resources with continuous problem solving.


 Selective Preferences

The ideal candidate for this position will have:

·     Bachelor's degree in Accounting/Finance preferred.

·     Current state employees with at least 2 years’ experience as a Revenue Auditor or 12 hours of accounting coursework may be substituted.

·     Must have personal vehicle and valid Arizona driver's license.

·     Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other computerized accounting systems.

·     Experience with Continuous Improvement or LEAN.
