This position is responsible for the technical development and maintenance of Local Area Networks (LAN) and Information Technology systems and services within the complex.


-          Maintains mission critical networks in optimal operation performance

-          Troubleshoots complex hardware and software problems in support of end-users

-          Installs, configures and upgrades client workstation operation systems and applications

-          Initiates and enforces network security via passwords, anti-virus software and intruder detection programs

-          Creates, modifies, moves, and deletes user accounts in conjunction with customer service

-          Plans, tests and implements Local and Wide Area Network development specifications

-          Adds, moves, changes and performs preventative maintenance and repairs on telephone systems

-          Supports and administrates CATV and Polycom (video conferencing) and IP surveillance cameras

-          Prepares reports and develops implementation plans

-          Drives on State business

-          Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment



Requires possession of, and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).


Knowledge of:

-          Network topology, network resources, and TCP/IP

-          PC operating systems and hardware

-          Telecommunication systems

-          Printers, copiers, scanners, and faxes

-          Application software

-          Managing anti-virus, Active Directory user accounts and resources, Smartphones, and data backup systems including media management

-          Managing network resources

-          Installing, testing, and repairing telecommunication equipment, voice and data lines, CATV, video conferencing, and IP surveillance cameras

Skill in:

-          Verbal and written communication

-          Building and maintaining interpersonal relationships

-          Customer service

-          Troubleshooting and problem solving

-          Project management and implementation

-          Report preparation

-          Reading and interpreting electrical blueprints

-          Testing telecommunication equipment and diagnosing malfunctions 

-          Time management, prioritization, and organization

-          Identifying and interpreting end user issues

Ability to:

-          Learn and adhere to Arizona Department of Corrections (ADCRR) policies and procedures

-          Analyze and diagnose problems related to operating and network systems and develop effective solutions

-          Understand complex interrelated technology and software functions

-          Enhance and maintain operating systems and related software to optimize computer performance

-          Plan and conduct extensive technical surveys

-          Consult on issues and requests from end users

-          Be self-motivated and perform duties unsupervised

-          Work in a prison environment



-          Network certification (i.e. MCSE or CompTIA A+)

-          A minimum of three years of experience in a networking environment and technical training covering data communications principles, electronic and Local Area Networks  or four years on-the-job training in a networking environment

-          Telecommunications or data communications environment with course work in the above areas


Employment is contingent on the selected applicant passing a background investigation, a drug test*, and a medical/physical examination.

Positions in this classification participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).  Enrollment eligibility will become effective after 27 weeks of employment.
