Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management

To manage and reduce fire risk to protect Arizona's people, communities, and wildland areas to champion the health of Arizona's natural resources.

 

The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) provides resources for the prevention and suppression of wildland fire on State Trust Land and private property located outside incorporated communities.  The Agency provides services for fire prevention, urban, and community forestry, forest stewardship, forest health, utilization and marketing, and has a wide variety of grants available.  DFFM also houses the Office of the State Fire Marshal, which provides fire inspection and permitting services.

JOB SUMMARY: 

Directing the activities of a wildland engine and its crew during daily project work, fire operations (both emergency and planned events), and all risk operations, to Include all specified documentation and paperwork. Responsible for supervising all preventative maintenance performed on apparatus or equipment by crew personnel, to include all specified documentation and paperwork.

The Engine Captain will assists AFMO with presenting fire training to meet the needs of the District Operates motorized apparatus and emergency equipment to include engines end utility trucks.

The Engine Captain will also operate equipment to include portable pumps, radios, chainsaws, chippers, A TV/UTV. Is in charge of the Inventory associated with the District's engines.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

·       Supervise work being performed by crew members to monitor quality of work, and progress to meet timelines. This will include assigned dally projects as well as creating projects for the crew to work on

·       Supervise maintenance checks and services of apparatus and equipment to include vehicle condition, condition of hose, chainsaws, and other firefighting equipment

·       Ensure inventory levels and conditions are kept to standards on assigned apparatus, and ensure bay and work areas are kept organized, neat, and clean

·       Respond to wildland fires and all risk incidents

·       Conduct and/or assist In district training needs

·       Operate fire apparatus and equipment

·       Other duties as assigned as related to the position

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

·       Various fire apparatus and equipment commonly found on wildland fire operations

·       ICS and how fire operations work on various type incidents

·       Handheld and mobile radio operation and dispatch procedures

·       Water handling equipment and Its uses on wildland fire

·       Chainsaw use, maintenance, and repair

·       Principles and practices of supervision and management

Skills:

·       Effective wildland firefighting and fire line supervision skills

·       Effective verbal and written communication skills

·       Effective interpersonal skills

·       Effective supervision skiffs

·       Effective mapping skills

·       Basic computer skills

Ability to:

·       Make sound decisions, maintain composure, and communicate clear concise instructions during high-stress wildland fire operations

·       Drive/operate a motor vehicle

·       Read, write, speak, and understand the English language

·       Compose detailed written reports

·       Perform heavy lifting and have an adequate physical fitness level to work on the fire line per NWCG PMS310-1 standards

·       Provide effective guidance and supervision to subordinate staff

 

SELECTIVE PREFERENCES: 

·       NWCG qualification of ENGB and physical fitness level of Arduous per PMS310-1

Driving Requirements: 

·       Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.)

·       Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment
