Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management


The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management (DFFM) provides resources for the prevention and suppression of wildland fire on State Trust Land and private property located outside incorporated communities.  The Agency provides services for fire prevention, urban, and community forestry, forest stewardship, forest health, utilization and marketing, and has a wide variety of grants available.  DFFM also houses the Office of the State Fire Marshal, which provides fire inspection and permitting services.


Seasonal Firefighter

(April through September)

Various Locations


Under the direct supervision of a fire line supervisor, work as a part of an engine crew suppressing wildland fire. 


These duties include but are not limited to:


-          Operate assigned fire apparatus and equipment

-          Perform maintenance checks and services of apparatus and equipment to include: vehicle condition, condition of hose, chainsaws, and other firefighting equipment

-          Participate in physical training conducted by crew personnel

-          Perform daily work assignments in a professional manner, meeting quality standards and timelines

-          Checks to ensure inventory levels and conditions are kept to standards on assigned apparatus, and ensure bay and work space is kept organized, neat and clean

-          Attend Basic Wildland Firefighter training

-          Performs other duties as assigned


Knowledge of:

-          Assigned fire apparatus and equipment

-          Basic wildland firefighting duties and tasks as taught in BWFF training classes

-          Safe chainsaw operations

Skill in:

-          Written and verbal communication

-          Basic computer operations

-          Manual labor

-          Maintaining effective working relationships

Ability to:

-          Ability to drive/operate a motor vehicle

-          Read, write, speak and understand the English language

-          Perform heavy lifting and have an adequate physical fitness level to work on the fireline per NWCG PMS 310-1 standards


-          Temporary appointment means an appointment made for a maximum of 1,500 hours worked in any agency in each calendar year

-          Driving Requirement:  Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid Arizona driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.  Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.)
