  • Answer questions from public and private agencies concerning state and federal requirements in special education.
  • Serve as statewide consultant to Public Education Agencies (PEAs), other state agencies, community service providers, and parent organizations offering technical assistance and training when requested in the area of secondary transition services to help achieve compliance and effective program services for children.
  • Engage in statewide activities that increase best practices with federal and state requirements.
  • Attend conferences, write articles, solicit information from experts in the field, read newsletters, journals, books, regulations, attorney general opinions, and laws related to special education and secondary transition.
  • Attend special education staff meetings and participate in various intra and inter-agency task teams/committees.
  • Develop charts, brochures, or handouts to inform the public, parents, PEAs, and other state agencies of compliance of state and federal special education laws/regulations and practices/processes for implementation of programs to meet compliance.
  • Organize and write materials and guidelines to be disseminated to PEAs and the public.
  • Serve as liaison to other sections within the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) and to other state agencies for the purpose of improving transition services for youth with disabilities.
  • Participate in the development, coordination, and implementation of ADE-ESS annual transition conference.
  • Participate in the analysis and reporting of data related to indicators.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of improvement activities related to these indicators.
  • In-state and out-of-state travel is required for this position.

    Secondary Transition Specialist

    Phoenix Location

    Salary Range: $55,000 -$65,000

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs):

    KNOWLEDGE:

    • Familiarity with ADE structure and authority
    • State and federal laws and implementing regulations in the area of special education and transition
    • History and development of special education
    • Role of other state and private agencies in the provision of transition services to children with disabilities
    • School-to-work initiatives, work experience programs, employment models, self-determination approaches, social security work incentive programs, preservice preparation programs, and state and local-level interagency agreement
    • School administrative structure and current sources of information for special education teachers
    • Understanding of Special Education Agencies (SEA) and Public Education Agencies (PEA), and private school organization structure
    • Applicants must have taught or administered a special education program.
    • A Bachelor’s degree in special education, vocational counseling or a related field is required.

    SPECIAL SELECTION FACTOR(S):

    Preference will be given to those applicants with a Master’s degree in special education, vocational counseling, or a related field.
