Under direction of the Bridge Design Leader, The Bridge Design Engineer performs Project Engineer responsibilities for a team of bridge engineering professionals and, as the project leader.


Major Responsibilities/Essential Functions

·         Utilizes design software and other computer programs including CADD in the design of transportation structures

·         Provides input on project scopes, designs and development representing the best interests of the State in project development meetings and other meetings related to the ADOT state highway system

·         Coordinates activities with federal, state, local and private entities to assure conflicts are minimized and the public is well served

·         Provides leadership and coaches Group personnel in area of technical expertise to enhance the quality of the product, service to the  customer and assure compliance with all applicable plans, specifications rules and requirements

·         Coaches and guide Group personnel relating to area of technical expertise and Department’s quality initiative

·         Assists field personnel with construction issues




Knowledge of:

·         Principles and practices of Civil Engineering as applied to the development, design, construction and maintenance of the State Highway System

·         Federal and State regulations, policies procedures and guidelines as applicable to the Highway Development process

·         Bridge standards, polices, and procedures, State statutes, safety practices; methods procedures and techniques utilized in leading and directing assigned resources

·         Computer applications as they pertain to area of assignment

·         Familiarity with the principles of consultant agreements, relationships and the role of Project Managers

Skills in:

·         Communication and interpersonal relationships as applied to contacts with other staff within the agency, consultants, other agency staff and representatives from other governmental jurisdictions

·         Promoting and participating in the ADOT partnering initiative

·         Oral and written communication

·         Applying sound judgement on bridge engineering practices

Ability to:


·         Understand problem-solving procedures for application in engineering problems

·         Understand relationships and the role of Project Managers

·         Understand how the various computer programs apply the engineering principles



·         Four-year College Degree in Civil Engineering

·         Progressive experience through active project participation

·         On-the-job training through numerous workshops and seminars


·         A valid state Driver's license with an acceptable 39 month driving history.

·         Registered as a professional engineer

This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License.  Candidates for this position must complete page 5 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR).  The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C.
