The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) is committed to providing the youth under our care and supervision with effective, efficient, and high quality rehabilitative and transformative services in support of our vision, mission, and values.


We are seeking a Part-Time or Full-Time Psychiatrist to work under the direction of the Medical Director, providing psychiatric services in the medical specialty of child/adolescent psychiatry for ADJC youth at the secure care juvenile correctional facility; including neuropsychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, prescribe medication as appropriate; attend and participate in multidisciplinary diagnostic and treatment team planning an review conferences; documents encounters in the medical records; and performs other duties appropriate to the class.  This position will ensure program continuity and compliance with ADJC policy, procedures and protocols.


Duties include:


·         Examine, evaluate, diagnose neuropsychiatric and mental status; dictate neuropsychiatric evaluation report for health unit files and ADJC master files

·         Meet with youth for individual therapy contacts as clinically indicated; carefully monitor benefits and effects of neuropsychiatric medication

·         Review of all available social, education, medical, developmental, psychiatric, psychological, legal and behavioral information on selected newly committed juveniles from neuropsychiatric perspective

·         Consult with appropriate ADJC intake/classification staff to assist in disposition recommendations

·         Provide neuropsychiatric consultation and opinion to ADJC staff, either individually or at treatment staff meetings with respect to either individual case or a general psychiatric topic

·         Participate in various management, administrative, planning and briefing meetings and sessions

·         Conduct formal and informal visits or “rounds” with youth and ADJC staff in a variety of institutional setting, such as a classroom, living units, recreations, dining room, or other campus setting

·         Prepare ancillary administrative reports in conjunction with the above clinical duties and responsibilities

·         Maintain and update diagnostic and treatment skills in the medical specialty of child adolescent psychiatry/neuropsychiatry through continuing medical education requirements of the Board of Medical Examiners

·         Participate in education and training programs

·         Performs other duties as assigned  


Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of child psychiatry and general psychiatry
  • Basic principles and practices of general medicine and public health


Skill in:  

  • In diagnosing neuropsychiatric disorders and effectively prescribing psychiatric medication and psychiatric treatment in general; to undertake psychotherapy, family therapy, or behavioral therapy as clinically necessary


Ability to: 

  • Prepare clear, effective, meaningful, and scientific written or verbal neuropsychiatric/medical reports and consultations
  • Interact effectively on both a professional and interpersonal level with ADJC professional staff, parole staff; as well as, with outside professional agency staff and parents
  • Fully integrate and coordinate individual youth psychiatric treatment plans with other individuals multi-disciplinary treatment plans as well as with the overall ADJC individual treatment plan for each youth


Must have a Doctor’s degree from an accredited school of Medicine or approved school of Osteopathic Medicine, Board eligible or Board certified in psychiatry, preferably child psychiatry, two years of experience in the field of child/adolescent psychiatry.  Possession of license to practice medicine in the State of  Arizona granted by the Arizona State Board of Medical Examiners or the State Board of Osteopathic Examiners.

Requires possession of, and ability to retain, a current valid Arizona-issued drivers license.  Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license records checks, maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).


Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation and drug test.



Applicants must meet the KSA’s, pass an oral/panel interview exam, a post offer pre-employment drug test and a comprehensive background investigation
