Job Description

The Arizona Department of Agriculture (ADA) is currentlyrecruiting for one Agriculture Inspector IV for the Citrus Fruit and VegetableDivision (CFV).  The position is locatedin Yuma, Arizona and will require in State and out of State travel.


Under a Cooperative Agreement with the United States Foodand Drug Administration (FDA) the Citrus, Fruit and Vegetable Standardizationprogram oversee implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)Produce Safety Rule(PSR).  Theimplementation includes training/outreach as well as regulatory and compliance.


Job Summary:

Under general supervision of the FSMA Grant Manager, thisposition, will provide Inspection services, training and guidance for the FDAFood Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule (PSR).  The position will conduct inspection servicesto all entities including: Growers, Packers, Holders/Coolers, and Harvesters ofcovered commodities under the Produce Safety Rule to insure that these entitiesare in compliance with the requirements.


The position will participate in the development of arisk ranking and prioritization for On-Farm-readiness-Reviews (OFRR).  Attend trainings as directed for delivery ofthe OFRR’s; compile a list of “Farms” and develop introductory letters and phonecalls with Stakeholders for delivery of the OFRR’s; deliver the OFRR’s toStakeholders according to their Risk Ranking. Help expand the current farm inventory and check the validly to improvethe current database. As determined and required by FDA, the inspector willcomplete training, follow Inspection Protocol, conduct inspections, record anddocument appropriately.  Interpret andapply policies, procedures and requirements under the Produce Safety Rule. Completeall other duties assigned by supervisors.


This position requiresyou to drive a state vehicle on state business and the ability to pass afederal and financial background check.


Knowledge of:

Knowledge of Federal, State and agency laws, rules,regulations and policies governing Inspection activities, safety practices andpublic relations.

Knowledge of the Food Safety Modernization Act and theProduce Safety Rule.  Knowledge of GoodAgricultural Practices, HACCP and basic Food Safety principles. Basic knowledgeof recording data as observed according to established criteria. Knowledge ofpractices, procedures, and enforcement guidelines for conducting agriculturalinspections.


Skills in:

Applying and interpreting federal, state and agency laws,regulations and policies governing inspection activities, safety practices andpublic relations. Reading and interpreting the Food Safety Modernization Actand the Produce Safety Rule. Review and understand law and regulations,industry-related references, verbal and nonverbal communication techniques andappropriate agency databases. Performing individual inspections to insurecompliance under the Produce Safety Rule. Collect information through visualinspection, interview Stakeholders, be objective and record data that isaccurate and grammatically correct. Must be able to identify potentialviolations. Must have effective oral and written communication, be detailoriented and display effective interpersonal skills.

Adapt successfully to deliver results in a timely mannerwhile maintaining attention to detail. Work cooperatively and effectively with a diverse group of people.

Maintain a high level of confidentiality and security ofinformation. Must act in an ethical manner at all times.  Be willing to consider other points of viewwhile maintaining focus on the objectives of the inspection.  Act and function independently whileinteracting effectively with both team members and Stakeholders.



Arizona Driver's License



Proficient in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Access,Outlook;

FDA Training - PSR Training

2 + years produce inspection experience



Requires possession of and the ability to retain acurrent Arizona driver’s license. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s licenserecord checks, must maintain acceptable driving record and must complete anyrequired driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).
