The Transportation Construction Tech 3 perform technical and specialized laboratory tests for correlation, Independent assurance, acceptance and research testing. Perform a full range of laboratory testing on aggregates, soils, asphaltic concrete, Portland cement concrete, rubberized asphalt, asphalt binder and emulsions in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO and Arizona Test methods.

Additional Duties Include;

  • Perform testing for Correlation test reports for soils/aggregate, Portland cement concrete and asphaltic concrete with other labs in the region

  • Perform testing for Independent Assurance Sampling test reports for soils/aggregates, Portland cement concrete and asphaltic concrete with other labs in the Region

  • Perform acceptance testing for asphalt binders, rubberized asphalt binders, carbonates and other testing not performed by the project labs

  • Calculations and reporting of tests performed in the lab

  • Computer input of test results into FAST database

  • Maintain and calibrate testing equipment used in the lab

  • Other duties as assigned by the Regional Materials Engineer. Operates a State vehicle in course and scope of job duties


Knowledge of:

  • Methods, procedures, and techniques used in sampling and testing highway construction materials

  • Independent Assurance and Correlation sampling and testing, calibration and verification of material testing equipment and construction Inspection

  • Operations and maintenance of a variety of materials testing and inspection measuring devices

  • Evaluation and interpretation of completed material testing results

Skills in:

  • Work scheduling and management 

  • Analysis and preparation of data

  • Written and verbal communication

  • Operation of equipment for completion of assigned duties

Ability to:

  • Perform complex mathematical calculations

  • Various functions of computer applications

  • Complete assignments to acceptable standards in a timely manner

  • Ensure that materials, equipment, and procedures used comply with agency standards


The ideal candidate for this position will have;

  • Completion of the Construction Lab Technician certification matrix through the technician 3 level

  • Arizona Technical Testing Institute Certifications required: Soils & Aggregate's and Asphalt 

  • American Concrete Institute: Concrete Strength Testing, Field Technician Grade 1

  • Demonstrate proficiency in testing PG binder, asphalt rubber and emulsion.
