*This position is eligible to participate in the ASE Stipend Pay Program, employees can earn up to $14,400 a year with qualifying certifications.

*Uniforms provided to shop employees at no charge and are eligible to participate in the Safety-toe Shoe reimbursement program (100% of cost up to $175.00 per year).

*Personal Tool Allowance of $600.00 per calendar year and Personal Tool Insurance Coverage up to $10,000/tools and up to $15,000/toolbox for qualified losses on state premises.


Fuels Unit

4/10 Work Schedule: Tuesday through Friday


This position is responsible for ensuring the safe and continued operation of fuel sites located throughout the State of Arizona for ADOT.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform maintenance, calibration, repairs and all other associated fueling components to include Automatic Tank Gauge, (ATG) and card lock fuel management systems.

  • Perform work and testing on stage I and stage II vapor recovery systems and class I division I electronic components.

  • Ensure compliance through auditing fuel reconciliation reports and computer programs.

  • Assist with project managing during tank removals and environmental remediation.

  • Track and manage databases pertaining to service work and compliance issues. 

  • Extensive travel throughout the State of Arizona will be required to perform most duties. Some overnight stays may be required.

This position requires flexibility with work hours and days/nights, weekends, and holidays to accommodate emergency repair work and varied schedules.



Knowledge in:

  • Thorough knowledge of normal operation of the equipment used in the day to day operation of the fueling process, essential to efficiently troubleshoot the equipment and facilitate the repair design, and construction of fueling facilities.

  • Policies, procedures, installation, piping, and all aspects related to the construction and maintenance of petroleum storage and dispensing equipment.

  • Policies, procedures, and regulations pertaining to the decommissioning and removal of underground fuel storage tanks, (Certified under A.A.C. Title 18 Chapter 12, Article 8).

Skills in:

  • The skill involved should include a high mechanical aptitude and field experience.

Ability to:

  • Comprehend the basic theory and function of electrical and electronic systems and successfully troubleshoot those systems. Also requires dexterity and ability to safely handle and lift heavy objects.

  • Pass a physical exam.


The ideal candidate for this position will have:

This position requires a minimum of 2 years experience in the petroleum industry. Experience in the repair and operation of automotive fuel systems is preferred.

Must possess or be able to obtain Arizona Department of Weights and Measures Registered Service Representative (RSR) license (required to work on fuel pump meters), Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Install and REtrofit certification (required to work on fuel tank components below ground), and Class A and B UST Operator certification as identified below, within six (6) months of hire, and retention of licensing and certifications throughout the period of employment.

Certified Technician for the installation and testing of OPW and CNI spill containment (fill buckets). This is Manufacturer administered training.

Certified Technician for the installation and testing of Vaporless mechanical line leak detectors. This is Manufacturer administered training.

Certified Technician for Petro-Tite precision line testing equipment. This is Manufacturer administered training. 

Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Tightness Testing required to test spill containment, piping sumps, and perform precision line tests required under the EPA revisions issued in 2015 and implemented in October 2018.

The certificates must be obtained from a training program recognized by the State of Arizona (such as from the EPA, ADEQ, state of Tennessee, Montana, and the Navajo Nation EPA (NNEPA).


Employment is contingent upon passing a medical/physical examination.

This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License.  Candidates for this position must complete and sign PART 1 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR).  The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.11 (H) and (I).  The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT.  Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR.
