The Arizona Game & Fish Department is responsible for managing Arizona’s fish and wildlife resource as an enduring public trust. In addition, the Department is charged with promoting safe and responsible use of watercraft and off-highway vehicles. Funding is provided from the sale of licenses and permits; watercraft registration fees; federal excise taxes on firearms, fishing equipment, boats, and other sporting goods; State lottery revenues; donations on State income tax forms; and various contracts and grants. Under the supervision of the Aquatic Research Program Manager, this position will lead research focused on native fish species, with an emphasis on research to improve techniques for propagating captive lineages of rare and sensitive species, increase production, and maximize fitness of fish stocked for conservation or re-establishment in the wild.  This position will serve as the lead research biologist at the Department’s Aquatic Research and Conservation Center (ARCC), located in Cornville, Arizona. This unique facility, which houses rare lineages of native fish species and supports research to propagate and re-establish native fish.

Major duties include:

  • Develops study plans and prepare compliance documents for research projects addressing the Department’s management information needs

  • Responsible for all phases of research including implementation, analysis, manuscript preparation, and publication and will also be expected to share research findings with Department managers and outside partners in written and oral form

  • Prepares funding proposals, prepare performance reports on existing funding agreements, and assist with management of agreements and responsible for equipment maintenance and identification of equipment and material needs for research projects, and be expected to assist with facility maintenance and fish care, in particular when these have special research requirements.

  • May oversee seasonal interns and will be expected to work closely and effectively as part of a small (currently 3 people) research team at ARCC, as well as with staff at nearby hatcheries

  • Expected to work as part of the larger Research Branch team to accomplish the branch’s goals and operational objectives which include, but are not limited to, outreach, training, and providing expertise and support to other work units in the Department

  • Expected, at times, to provide relief support of ARCC operations, which may include fish care and facility operations.This position may be asked to contribute to facility planning discussions.May be assigned to serve as a liaison to visiting scientists and students at ARCC

  • Performs other duties as assigned


The ideal candidate will have knowledge of the scientific method, experience in designing research studies, writing funding proposals, experience with advanced data analysis and interpretation, and the demonstrated ability to present research findings in scientific papers as well as in popular writing format.  The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a team with both internal and external partners.  The ideal candidate will have experience in fish culture, with an emphasis on fish propagation, and experience working with fish of the Southwest. Applicants must be willing to work varied hours in the outdoors, travel on overnight trips, and collect data in the field and the lab.


The candidate must have a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in wildlife or closely related field from an accredited college or university.  Prefer three years professional experience in fisheries and/or wildlife research/management. An advanced degree in wildlife sciences or closely related field from an accredited college or university may substitute for one year of required experience.

Position requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.  Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.).
