Job Description

The Accountant 1 is responsible for performing a variety of finance and budgeting functions and/or transactions which involve applying the principles, theories, and concepts of accounting to a specific system. This individual performs defined accounting tasks such as examining financial statements for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or other specific accounting requirements. Additional duties involve reconciling reports/financial data, identifying apparent inconsistencies or errors, carrying out assigned steps in accounting analyses, (such as computing standard ratios), and reviewing fiscal documents- verifying for accuracy, timeliness, and proper preparation.

JOB SUMMARY

The Accountant 1 is responsible for performing a variety of finance and budgeting functions and/or transactions which involve applying the principles, theories, and concepts of accounting to a specific system. This individual performs defined accounting tasks such as examining financial statements for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or other specific accounting requirements. Additional duties involve reconciling reports/financial data, identifying apparent inconsistencies or errors, carrying out assigned steps in accounting analyses, (such as computing standard ratios), and reviewing fiscal documents- verifying for accuracy, timeliness, and proper preparation.

 

What will I be doing in this job?

-       Builds automated validations into reconciliation practices for payroll and travel related data utilizing principles, methods and practices of fiscal and financial record keeping and incorporates technological strategies to increase efficiency.

-       Performs variety of finance and budgeting functions and/or transactions, including handling automated quality control reviews to detect and resolve complex problems applicable to full cycle of payroll and travel activities.

-       Gathers and compiles data and writes reports summarizing financial transactions and status of accounts for a given period. Makes entries and revisions to agency accounts, ledgers, and financial records. Examines and verifies payroll and travel fiscal transactions and financial documents.

-       Addresses payroll and travel problems, concerns, and issues associated with improving existing processes and handling special projects/requests from management. Escalates challenging issues to supervisor as necessary.

-      Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices; the analysis and reporting of financial data.

-      Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); comprehensive knowledge of the principles, concepts, practices,  methods and techniques of government accounting

-      Performance Management (PM), Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies

-      Effective technological skills

-      Effective communication skills both oral and written

-      Effective organization and time management skills

-      Ability to analyze and interpret fiscal data

-      Ability to speak effectively in front of internal groups of employees

Qualifications?

The ideal candidate will have:

-         Bachelor’s Degree in accounting or a closely related field is required

 

Licenses and Certifications?

Driving is required for State Business.

-        Employees who drive on state business require possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.  Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (See Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.11).
