Direct Support Professional (Habilitation Technician II) Caregiver

Job Summary:  The Department of Economic Security Division of Developmental Disabilities is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join our team as a Direct Support Professional. This position requires an individual to coach, teach, mentor and provide direct support to members who have Developmental Disabilities (i.e., autism, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability or epilepsy) ranging from mild to profound. The majority of services are designed to meet personal needs of the members in a 24-hour residential group home setting. Click Here to see a day in the life of a Caregiver. Flexibility in schedule (i.e., work different shift, overtime and change work locations) as these are 24-hour residential settings. Most schedules work nights, weekends and holidays. Requires lifting/carrying at least 50 lbs. and pushing/pulling at least 50 lbs. Base rate of pay is $12/hour. Shift differential rates are paid for 2nd shift (5% increase, $12.60/hour) and 3rd shift (10% increase, $13.20/hour).


Job Duties:

·         Responsible for the personal care (e.g., bathing, toileting, dressing, personal hygiene), health, safety and general well-being of members encouraging as much independence as possible.

·         Supports and encourages members in mealtime preparation, technique and service in accordance with specialized diets and engages and interacts with members during mealtime.  Occasionally prepares and cooks meals.

·         Implements Individual Support Plan (ISP) programs and strategies, records and occasionally compiles data, writes progress and communication notes.  Encourages development of new skills while maintaining present skills. Implements therapeutic recommendations that may include positioning, sensory activities and exercises.

·         Provides recreational, medical and leisure opportunities at home and in the community. Drives a transport vehicle, operates a lift, if needed, assists members with safety requirements including seat belts and shoulder belts. Ensures safety and stability of a wheelchair in the vehicle using tie downs.

·         Other duties as assigned, as related to the position


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities/Qualifications/Requirements:

·         Knowledge in 1) planning processes, 2) providing personal care, 3) cleaning and basic housekeeping, 4) cooking

·         Skilled in 1) communicating with members verbally and/or through basic sign language (knowledge of or experience in American Sign Language is not required), 2) planning activities designated to meet specific needs of individual/members, 3) participating in and implementing Individual Support Plans (ISP), 4) using the computer, including emails, 5) time and work management

·         Ability to 1) display compassion with respect to others, 2) attend staff training and apply the basic principles of program training and data collection designated to meet the specific needs of members, including medication administration, 3) understand and follow spoken and written directions, 4) read and write in English, 5) learn and use computer systems (e.g. Timesheet entry, computer-based trainings), 6) learn and apply basic physical, occupational, and speech therapy techniques, 7) learn and apply behavior support techniques, 8) drive a motor vehicle

·         Arizona Level 1 Clearance Card is required

·         In-state travel is required
