Job Description

The goal of testing is to identify/quantify poisons and toxins deemed important by law enforcement and/or public health agencies from both clinical and environmental matrices. This position works closely with the CDC LRN-C program (grant authority) as well as sister LRN-C laboratories around the nation. This is a supervisory position that holds authority over both resource management and the program budget.

JOB SUMMARY

This position oversees the implementation, staff, instrumentation, outreach, grant management, and analytical activities of the ADHS Laboratory's Chemical Preparedness program. The goal of testing is to identify/quantify poisons and toxins deemed important by law enforcement and/or public health agencies from both clinical and environmental matrices. This position works closely with the CDC LRN-C program (grant authority) as well as sister LRN-C laboratories around the nation. This is a supervisory position that holds authority over both resource management and the program budget.

 

What will I be doing in this job?

-     Supervise laboratory staff. oversee, plan, organize and coordinate the activities of the Chemical Emergency  Response Section. Report Arizona results to the LRN-C using Results Messenger.

-     Conduct laboratory examinations on clinical samples for the identification of LRN-C analytes. Work on proficiencies, validations, and exercise samples.

-     Conduct outreach to both the 1st responder and hospital community.

-     Ensure compliance with CLIA regulations as a CLIA General Supervisor.

-     Perform instrument maintenance as needed or scheduled.

-     Approve procurement orders and maintain supplies to meet the needs of a Level-2 Laboratory.

 

What does this job require?

-     Chemistry Knowledge; education,  training and laboratory application.

-      Knowledge of scientific terminology and the understanding of characteristics in chemicals and the resulting compatibilities/incompatibilities.

-      Knowledge/skills in the principles and practice of chemical analytical procedures and techniques including but not limited to: sample handling, sample preparation, digestion/extraction techniques, mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, and liquid chromatography.

-     Operate, maintain and interpret instrument data for specialized analytical instrumentation including complex software programs.

-     Follow and implement QA/QC plans and protocols and the principles/practice of laboratory safety.

-     Sample aliquoting techniques including weighing, measuring, and pipetting.

-     Knowledge of division/departmental policies..

-     Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies.

-     Possess leadership skills with the ability to manage people in both everyday situations and during time of emergency.

-     Strong ability to work in a team environment.

Qualifications?

The ideal candidate will have:

-     Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field and 4 years of technical professional level experience as a chemist.

-     Master's degree in a related field may substitute for 1 year of experience. PhD degree in a related field may substitute     for two years of experience.

       -  Candidate must meet the Clinical LaboratoryImprovement Act (CLIA) minimum requirements as a General Supervisor for theperformance of high complexity testing as defined in the CLIA regulationssubpart D6171 493.1489(b)(2)(i).  See thefollowing link: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/CLIA?03_Interpretive_Guidelines_for_Laboratoires.asp



 

Licenses and Certifications?

 

-       Driver's License

 

Driving is required for State Business.

-      Employees who drive on state business require possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment.  Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any driver training (See Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.11).
