The Arizona Attorney General’s Office State Government Division (SGD)/Public Law Section (PLS) is seeking an Assistant Attorney General. Public Law Section attorneys serve in the role of  general or in-house counsel for our clients. Our Section represents a diverse group of state agencies and boards involved in areas such as financial regulation (Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions, Department of Real Estate), natural resources (Water Quality Appeals Board, Arizona Power Authority), military affairs (Department of Veterans’ Services) and promotions (Arizona Office of Tourism). We are a collegial team and are looking for an attorney who enjoys working in diverse practice areas and is interested in the dynamic field of public law. The attorney in this position will advise and represent a variety of PLS client agencies, commissions and boards, as assigned. Your  duties will likely include presenting arguments and evidence at hearings before the Arizona Office of Administrative Hearings and in state court, handling any associated appeals, providing advice and counsel on legal issues, reviewing and preparing contracts, negotiating settlements, as well as handling contract disputes and procurement matters.  Advice matters may include administrative law, statutory interpretation, constitutional issues, application of court rules, open meeting law, public records requests, and public monies issues.  In addition, the attorney in this position will provide independent legal advice to boards and commissions throughout the State Government Division that require assistance in administrative hearing matters from an attorney other than their regularly assigned counsel. The attorney will also likely work with the lead Assistant Attorney General who reviews and makes recommendations concerning administrative rules packages submitted to the Attorney General for approval.  Salary is based on experience and qualifications. 


·         Travel is required for this position. A valid Arizona Driver’s License is required, along with consent to have your driving record run periodically.

·         Admission to, and good standing with, the Arizona State Bar is required (include on resume the date(s) of admission in Arizona and any other states). Candidate must have an active Arizona State Bar license.

·         Attorney applicants are required to submit a writing sample with their resume/application profile.

Ø  Writing Sample Guidelines: The writing sample should contain an analysis of some substantive legal issue and provide insight concerning your ability to think and to explain and advocate for a particular position.


Knowledge needed:

·         Knowledge and understanding of applicable Arizona statutes, federal laws, and the rules and regulations of state and federal courts.

·         Knowledge of legal techniques, the basic concepts of American Jurisprudence, and of the formats utilized in the preparation of legal documents.

·         Comprehensive knowledge of and ability to apply general legal principals and the ability to grasp new areas of law in a timely and efficient manner.

·         Knowledge of the scope and character of overlapping Arizona statutory law and Arizona constitutional provisions, trial and administrative hearing procedures and rules of evidence.

Skills needed:

·         Skill in legal and factual issue analysis, legal research, legal writing, oral presentation and negotiation.

Abilities needed:

·         Ability to understand statutory and case law construction and provide an explanation of those constructs to non-attorney directors and staff of client agencies.

·         Ability to perform demanding legal research involving complex questions of law.

·         Ability to analyze difficult and complex legal issues and to apply legal principles and precedents.

·         Ability to present statements of fact, law and argument involving multiple parties clearly and logically in written and oral form.

·         Ability to make presentations to non-attorney audiences on legal and administrative matters.

·         Abilities include effective and situation-appropriate interpersonal communication, good judgment, high ethical and professional standards.

·         Ability to function well under a high volume of work, time constraints and stressful situations.


·         Ideal Candidates will have experience in public law and in providing legal advice to governmental entities that act as administrative hearing bodies.
